Taking Measurements
- To ensure a perfect fit, accurate body measurements are essential. Use a flexible measuring tape and wear fitted clothing or undergarments. Have someone assist you and double-check all measurements- take them 3 times and the average of these should be within 0.5cm of them all.
If you don't have a flexible measuring tape, use a piece of tough or thick string to get the size then lay the string flat and measure that afterwards. This isn't the most accurate method as the string may stretch, so try not to pull it too tight when you are using it.
Stand naturally and relax your posture. If you don't have anyone to help you, stand in front of a mirror so you can see that the tape is level (parallel to the floor) the whole way around you.
Our key measurements are (and see on image below):
- Bust – Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level. The fullest part is usually over the nipple area.
- Hips – Measure around the widest part of your hips- this is usually across the buttock, juts make sure it is the widest part. You can usually tell by sliding the tape up or down a little once you have it wrapped around you, to see if it gets tighter or falls loose.
- Height - Gowns are made for average height women. Typically the longer gowns won't matter but for anything midi or ankle length, let me know if you are particularly petite or tall so I can make adjustments for you.
A note about waist measurements: I generally don't use this because belly sizes will obviously change a lot. If you are particularly big or carrying twins etc, you can send me this measurement if you are worried and think it might be helpful.
Consider a professional: If you want highly accurate measurements, you can visit a tailor or professional measurement service. I don't really recommend this unless you're very worried as its a bit of a waste of time and money. I've maybe had one gown in 500 that hasn't fit absolutely perfectly, it is very rare as the fabric is extremely forgiving and stretchy. The colour pigments are fabulous so even if it is stretched to its limit, it will still look amazing! I can usually go off your regular dress size give or take depending on your maternity size.
